San Diego, California is one of the most popular wedding destinations in the world... our beautiful seaside city welcomes over 36,000 wedding ceremonies each year! I have lived in San Diego for over 20 years and am familiar with all of the most popular wedding locations in "America's Finest City". From the Cuvier Wedding Bowl in La Jolla and the Alcazar Garden in Balboa Park, to the beaches outside the historic Hotel del Coronado and the incredible views from Sunset Cliffs, I have married couples from Arizona, Utah, New York and New Mexico, and as far away as Germany and the UK. Below are some of my favorite San Diego coastal locations and venues. I have no doubt that together we will find the most perfect setting for your wedding day! |

CORONADO BEACH Coronado Beach is a beautiful, flat sandy beach situated in front of the historic Hotel del Coronado. It is separated into three zones... South Beach (the most accessible; plenty of parking), Central Beach (to the right of the Hotel del) and North Beach (very private, but a hike across the heavy sand). If you are considering a smaller wedding with chairs and/or an arch, this is the perfect location. Permits are not reqired for groups under 25 people and setting up chairs and decorations is just fine. If you are having a larger wedding (more than 25 people), you may need to obtain a permit. Contact the Park & Recreation Department at (619) 522-7342 or visit their website. |

SUNSET CLIFFS Offering privacy, plenty of parking and magnificent views of the Pacific Ocean, this location is truly inspiring! Luscombs Point at Hill Street requires a permit and is best for larger weddings with chairs, arch, music, etc. There is also a very private, easily accessible secret location that very few people know about...perfect for your smaller ceremony and no permit would be needed as long as the ceremony is more casual (no chairs, arch, etc.) and under 25 people. E-mail me for more info. NOTE: I don't recommend a cliff location if you are having a wedding that includes small children, since the cliffs can be quite unforgiving...the beaches and parks are a lot safer for the little ones. |

WINDANSEA BEACH – LA JOLLA Windansea Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in San Diego. Located in a residential area of La Jolla, this is a "locals only" area. Windansea is best known for incredible scenery with sandstone rocks that offer a secluded atmosphere for your ceremony, providing a beautiful backdrop for photos. NOTE: They do not allow set up of chairs, arch, etc. at this beach without a permit from the San Diego Park & Rec Department. For smaller groups, this beach is ideal and offers many lovely areas for your ceremony... and of course, incredible sunsets! |

SCRIPPS COASTAL RESERVE Located in the La Jolla Farms area and commanding a view for 30 miles, the precipitous upland portion of the reserve is topped by a grassy knoll and bounded by steep coastal canyons. Parking in the immediate area is limited since it is located in a residential area, but there is plenty of parking on La Jolla Shores Drive which is just a short walk away. This is a wonderful, very private location perfect for an elopement or very small group, but It is about a 1/4 mile walk on a dirt trail from the reserve entrance to the cliffs... an important consideration if you have elderly guests. |

TORREY PINES STATE RESERVE The Torrey Pines State Reserve is located between La Jolla and Del Mar. is the home of our nation's rarest pine tree – Pinus torreyana also known as the Torrey Pine. In winter you may see gray whales as they migrate south, and with luck, you may see bottlenose dolphins any time. There are many lovely locations in the preserve for a wedding ceremony. The Guy Fleming Trail view deck pictured to the left, is a particularly beautiful spot and offers a magnificent view of the Pacific Ocean. Note: You must obtain a special event permit to have a wedding of any size in the reserve, or risk getting a ticket. Contact Debbie Valdez at (619) 688-3385 for more information. |

PACIFIC BEACH / MISSION BEACH The most private portion of Pacific Beach is north of Crystal Pier and extends over one mile. Two miles south of the Pier, PB becomes Mission Beach which is the center of a continuous stretch of beach known as The Strand, extending over two miles, beginning at the Mission Bay channel entrance and ending at the north end of Pacific Beach. The Strand is the most popular beach area in the City of San Diego and draws large crowds in summer. South Mission Beach is bordered on the south by the Mission Bay Channel and is the widest beach in the City. |

NORTH COUNTY BEACHES There are many lovely beach and cliff locations along Coast Route 101 that runs from Del Mar all the way to Oceanside. Some of my favorite North County coastal beaches include Tamarack State Beach in Carlsbad, Moonlight State Beach in Encinitas and Fletcher Cove Beach Park in Solana Beach. If you are in town prior to your wedding, take a drive along our beautiful coastline and you will be sure to find the perfect place... or visit www.a-zsandiegobeaches.com and click on the "North County" link to the left for a virtual tour of our North County coastal areas. |
MORE BEAUTIFUL SAN DIEGO WEDDING LOCATIONS...
Below are some higher-profile, popular outdoor locations If you are having a large wedding on a Saturday or Sunday, during the height of wedding season, a reservation/payment of a fee is required and definitely recommended. You can check availability of these locations by clicking on the "availability" box on their respective websites.
Balboa Park is now issuing permits for these locations: |

A WORD ON SAN DIEGO COUNTY PERMITS & RESERVATIONS... There are a number of separate cities located within San Diego County (Coronado, San Diego, Del Mar, Encinitas, etc.) and each city has different rules for beach and park weddings. The more popular, high-profile wedding locations require reservations and permits. The Cuvier Wedding Bowl and Calumet Park in La Jolla, for instance, are booked almost a year in advance and require a use permit and payment of a permit fee, as do the beautiful gardens in Balboa Park. If you are having a wedding at any of these locations on a Saturday or Sunday during the height of wedding season (May through August) reservations are strongly suggested and often required, and must usually be made well in advance. Fees vary ($250 - $500) depending on the location and where you live in San Diego. Technically, the City of San Diego will not issue a permit for a beach wedding on the sand, and require you to reserve one of their grassy park areas for your ceremony. For more information on permits, visit the City of San Diego General Use Park Permit page. My "unofficial" rule of thumb for public beaches, the cliffs and parks, is that if your guest list is small (under 20 or so people) and your ceremony is more casual (no chairs, arch, etc.), it shouldn't be a problem to have your ceremony on a beach in the City of San Diego. I can make suggestions on the best area for your ceremony, depending on the number of people and the time of year. If your guest list is under 25 people, and decorations and chairs are what you have in mind, then you should have your ceremony at the beach in Coronado (no permit required for groups under 25 and any set up is just fine.) They are very easy-going about having weddings on the sand there. If you are are having over 25 people and/or you are setting up chairs, arches, flowers and music, you must get a permit and reserve your location, both in Coronado, the City of San Diego (this includes La Jolla), and most other cities in San Diego County. If you don't, you always run the risk of the location already being occupied or having your ceremony shut down by a park and rec employee (although in my years of officiating I have never experienced the latter). ... this is my unofficial take, or course! |
