PLEASE NOTE: It is a very good idea to call and make an appointment to obtain your marriage license. Due to the recent Supreme Court ruling, the Clerk's offices are swamped with couples obtaining their marriage licenses.

Some Clerk's Offices don't accept debit / credit cards. BRING CASH OR CHECK, JUST IN CASE.

County Clerk Business Hours:
8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday, except holidays.
9:00 am to 3:00 pm, Saturday, Kearny Mesa office only.

NOTE: The Kearny Mesa office is NOT open on Saturdays that precede a holiday including Jan. 19, Feb. 16, Mar. 29, May 24, July 5, Aug. 30, and Nov. 29. All the County Clerk's offices are closed on major holidays, including Cesar Chavez day. When in doubt, call the Clerk's office to find out if they are open or click here for a list of Closed Dates.

REGULAR MARRIAGE LICENSE

The fee for a Regular Marriage License is $50. A blood test is not required.

To save time at the Clerk's office, download the REGULAR MARRIAGE LICENSE APPLICATION
and fill it out before you go to the Clerk's office.

Each person must present one form of valid photo identification with proof of age (driver's license, passport, etc.).

If either party has been granted a divorce within 90 days of applying for a new marriage license,
a copy of the final divorce decree must be presented at the time of issue.

Your marriage license is effective immediately and valid for 90 days anywhere within the state of California.

Once you have your marriage license the ceremony can be performed at the location of your choice by any minister, clergyman or wedding officiant, or by the county recorder.

After the ceremony, I would be happy to hand-deliver your marriage license to the processing office of the County Clerk's office on the morning of the first business day following your ceremony, where it will be filed. It is the responsibility of your officiant to file the license, but you may drop it off yourself if you prefer.

After your wedding, certified copies of your license (which becomes your Marriage Certificate) may be purchased one week to 14 days after the license (signed by ONE witness and your officiant) is returned to the county recorder's office. NOTE: California requires one witness be present at the ceremony, although there are two witness signature lines on the license.

If you need to speak with a Marriage Section staff member, call (619) 531-6248. Se habla Español.

Couples who choose the Confidential License should be aware that when certified copies of the Confidential Marriage License are requested, the copies can ONLY be issued to the Bride or Groom with proper identification.

HOW TO OBTAIN AN OFFICIAL COPY OF YOUR MARRIAGE LICENSE BY MAIL AFTER YOUR WEDDING DAY

IT IS IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER, that the State of California County Clerk's Office
DOES NOT automatically send you a copy of your official marriage license after your wedding!

You must formally request and pay for a certified copy of your marriage license from the County Clerk where your license was purchased. Please Note: Each County Clerk's office has slightly different requirements for obtaining a copy of your official marriage license.

To request a certified copy of your Marriage License by mail from the San Diego County Clerk's office you can do one of the following:

  1. Fill out the "Request for a Certified Copy of Marriage Certificate" form that was included in the large manilla envelope with your marriage license. Just fill out the information, include a check for $13 for each copy requested, and follow the mailing instructions.
  2. Purchase a certified copy of your license by appearing in person and filling out a Marriage Certificate application at any one of the five County Clerk's offices. You will need to have the following information available when you arrive:
    • The full name of the Groom.
    • The full MAIDEN name of the Bride.
    • The date of the marriage.
  3. Request a certified copy of a Marriage Certificate by mail. You will need to provide the Clerk with the following information either by downloading and filling out this request application, or on a piece of paper, print the following:
    • The full name of the Groom.
    • The full MAIDEN name of the Bride.
    • The date of the marriage.
    • The address where copy is to be mailed.

PLEASE NOTE: If you are requesting a certified copy of a confidential marriage license, the request must contain a notarized signature of the bride or groom. If they are requested in person, a valid picture ID must be presented to the County Clerk.

The cost for a certified copy of a marriage certificate is $13.00 for each copy. Please DO NOT send cash. The fee for searching is non-refundable, if the record is not found.

Send your request and information, along with a check or money order payable to:

San Diego County Assessor/Recorder/Clerk
P.O. Box 121750
San Diego, CA 92112-1750
ATTN: Marriage Records

Please allow 10 working days, after receipt, to process your request. If you need to speak with a Vital Records staff member, call (619) 237-0502, press 0. Se habla Español.

ANOTHER EASY OPTION

You can also fill out the request form,
write the check and give it to
your officiant along with the marriage
license on your wedding day.

I would be happy to include it with
the marriage license when I submit it
to the County Clerk's office for filing.
You can always order official copies
at a later date, and in some counties,
you can even do it online.
